Whale Watching (in season)
The whales are in Alaska right now. They'll be back in December. In the meantime, we're udpdating our whalewatching information.
Every December the island of Maui is blessed with the return of the majestic Humpback whales. From Alaska, approximatley 650 whales make the 3,000 mile trip to mate and give birth to their young in the warm waters around Maui, Lanai and Molokai. After the baby whales are born, they will remain in the warm waters off Maui until April or May. Young whales will gain up to 100 pounds per day nursing on their mother's rich milk which is almost 100 percent fat. The baby whales will need all that they can get in order to make the return trip to Alaska for the summer.
Maui has become one of the most well known humpback whale watching and whale research areas in the world. It's hard to describe what one feels when a 40 foot, 40 ton humpback whale breaches (jumps straight up out of the water) 100 yards in front of you. Let's just say you need to see it for yourself. Whale watching boats offer up to four tours per day and most guarantee whale sightings or your next trip is free. That's a lot of whales!
